Widening Our Reach

At PVB, we are dedicated to providing opportunities for all children to experience the magic of dance and movement. We know that education in the arts is an important part of classroom learning, and strive to bring these lessons to schools and community groups in the Pioneer Valley.

Educational Outreach Performance

Our Educational Outreach Performance includes a 75-minute interactive workshop for students, complementing and enhancing English Language Arts curricula for grades PreK-5.

Guided by an experienced educator/dancer, students explore the setting, characters, and plot of The Nutcracker as well as our Spring Performance, through the medium of ballet.

Prior to the Outreach Performance, PVB provides:

  • A learning box containing suggested lessons, writing prompts, the story of the ballet and additional related literature in English and Spanish;
  • Tactile materials such as pointe shoes and costumes; and
  • A list of basic ballet vocabulary.

Students learn how narratives are brought to life onstage, through choreography, music, costume and set design, and makeup. Pre-professional and professional dancers perform captivating excerpts from the current production and students are invited onstage to demonstrate scenes from the ballet.

The Educational Outreach Performance culminates in a lively question and answer period followed by a meet and greet with dancers.

Cost: $5/student for one program OR $8/student for both programs
*1 complimentary chaperone ticket for every 10 students. Additional chaperones are $5 each.

Community Outreach at PVB

Each season, PVB donates Affirmative Action Tickets to area nonprofits catering to underserved populations. We have a very limited number of tickets, so please get in touch as soon as possible. Your request does not guarantee tickets, but we are dedicated to providing as many opportunities as possible through this program.

PVB, best known for the annual Nutcracker production at the Academy of Music, has run a theater based Educational Outreach Performance Program at the Academy of Music for the past 8 years. PVB is adding a new educational outreach program to provide educational programs in the public schools targeting young students from diverse communities.
The goal of this project is to provide young children in grades K-2 from high risk backgrounds an opportunity to participate in the arts in an interactive environment in the classroom for approximately three to four 45 minute sessions and to reinforce awareness of and respect for their bodies.

Children will be given outreach education materials including a resource box that holds tactile ballet specific items like pointe shoes and leotards along with stories that many story ballets are based upon. In conjunction with the teacher, PVB Outreach Coordinator and the PVB Artist will determine which items will be needed for curriculum.
