Development and Communications Specialist

Position Overview

Pioneer Valley Ballet seeks an experienced, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking development and communications specialist to advance the fundraising and outreach goals of a well-established community arts organization celebrating its 50th year. The development and communications specialist will work with the staff—artistic directors, dance instructors, and administrative support staff—and board of directors to develop and steward corporate and individual donors, establish business partnerships and community collaborations, identify and apply for grants, and plan special events for stakeholders.

Founded in 1972, Pioneer Valley Ballet is a non-profit organization that engages, inspires and nurtures people of all ages and abilities through artistic excellence in classical ballet education and performance. Programming includes year-round training opportunities for dancers; two or more annual productions (including The Nutcracker) with student, community, and professional dancers; and dance outreach to the community. 

Key Responsibilities:

Development & Outreach 

  • In partnership with the board of directors, develop and implement strategies for identifying, researching, cultivating, and soliciting individual, corporate, and foundation donors
  • Manage all aspects of grant funding, including research, letters of inquiry, grant proposals and reports, and meetings with decision makers 
  • Plan donor stewardship and cultivation events 
  • Oversee donor data management, ensuring data entry is accurate and comprehensive and that acknowledgment letters are turned around quickly
  • Draft appeal letters and other fundraising and development-related communications


  • Oversee the communications and marketing plan that incorporates social media, direct mail, advertising, and regular e-newsletters to inform current constituents and to increase public awareness about PVB 
  • Conduct outreach to media contacts with focus on securing earned media opportunities
  • Explore opportunities for paid media


  • At least five years proven success in fundraising and community management, including cultivating relationships with stakeholders
  • Highly computer literate with capability in email marketing, MS Office, Google suite, and related business and communication tools with preferred experience in WordPress
  • Proven social media and email marketing expertise
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • WordPress experience a plus
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to multitask
  • Comfortable working both collaboratively and independently
  • Passion for the performing arts a plus

This is an hourly position with a pay range of $25/hour to $30/hour for an average of 12-15 hours per week. Some weeks will be busier than others, with our busiest months being early fall and during Nutcracker season and approaching our spring performance. Work may be done remotely, but proximity to western Massachusetts, is preferred.
